Message I wouldn't do anything in 1st gear..not just for that reason alone either. You're right about the speed being misleading. At that speed I would have been in second..at low to mid RPM's and then tapped the brakes a little to change the weight distribution to the nose which with a quick bap of the e-brake will set the weight lifted rear out with a quick steer to the direction of the turn..then just work the throttle and counter steer for control. That or you could clutch kick after the weight distribution by stomping down the clutch pedal and revving RPM's up to about 5500 or 6000 and popping the clutch out. This will set the tires spinning at about 4000 to 4500 rpm and make the engine "breath" a little easier..less stress on the valve train. Just trying to help...
